Arkasha Stevenson Makes Bold Debut With The First Omen
In her directorial debut, Arkasha Stevenson navigates the intricate balance between homage and innovation with finesse. Treading the challenging terrain of prequels, especially with Richard Donner’s iconic horror classic The Omen (1976), is no easy feat. However, Stevenson, alongside co-writer and producer Tim Smith, rises to the occasion, delving into the origins of the franchise’s infamous Antichrist character, Damien Thorn.
Crafting the Origin Story
Set in 1971, Stevenson’s narrative unfolds with the introduction of novitiate Margaret Daino, portrayed by Nell Tiger Free, at a Rome-based orphanage. Here, she stumbles upon a sinister plot to usher in the Antichrist, orchestrated by the Catholic Church in a bid to reclaim control over the countercultural society of the ’60s and ’70s. Yet, before delving into the depths of the conspiracy, Margaret bears witness to a horrifying birthing scene that earned the film an NC-17 rating for a staggering 18 months. Despite the challenges, Stevenson remains resolute in depicting crucial elements of the harrowing sequence, navigating a delicate compromise with the MPA’s ratings board.
Overcoming Obstacles
Reflecting on the ordeal, Stevenson, in a recent interaction, expressed dismay over the board’s focus on the female anatomy rather than the narrative’s substance. She underscored the importance of pushing boundaries in portraying such themes in a modern cinematic landscape.
“As Margaret delves deeper into her investigation, her own inner demons resurface, culminating in a scene paying homage to Isabelle Adjani’s iconic subway moment in Possession (1981). Free’s portrayal of the chilling sequence left the crew visibly shaken, underscoring the emotional intensity of the film’s narrative.
Stevenson’s Vision
In Stevenson’s eyes, the homage serves as a reverent nod to a sacred scene in cinematic history, showcasing Free’s remarkable talent and the film’s commitment to delivering a compelling narrative.”
