Army Sports Team Camp Focuses on Recovery, Camaraderie, and Competition

In a display of strength, coordination, and teamwork, 18 Soldiers and veterans in recovery participated in rugby passing drills at Fort Stewart’s Newman Gym. Using specially designed rugby wheelchairs, the athletes showcased their skills in preparation for the upcoming DoD Warrior Games in Orlando, Florida.

Sponsored by Winn Army Community Hospital’s Soldier Recovery Unit, the Army team engaged in a weeklong camp that included practices for adaptive team sports and educational sessions on mobility, nutrition, and sports psychology. Maj. Casey Turner, the officer in charge of the Army Recovery Care Program, emphasized the rigorous selection process for the 40-Soldier team, highlighting the importance of personal attributes, teamwork, and performance ability.

For Staff Sgt. Abel Baez, the Army’s Adaptive Reconditioning Program has been transformative. After facing the prospect of discharge due to injury, Baez found solace and support in the adaptive sports program, which not only helped him physically but also provided the camaraderie he missed from his military unit.

Dr. Yvonne LaRochelle, adaptive reconditioning lead at Fort Stewart SRU, stressed the significance of adaptive sports in aiding Soldiers’ emotional health and providing a sense of camaraderie and structure in their lives. The team spirit and support system within the program have been instrumental in the recovery process for many participants.

As the Army team gears up for the DoD Warrior Games, the focus remains on recovery, camaraderie, and competition. The dedication and teamwork displayed by the Soldier athletes reflect the values of the Army and highlight the transformative power of adaptive sports in the recovery journey.
