WWII Army Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday with Honors and Recognition

ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — Don Parker, a WWII Army veteran, celebrated his 100th birthday on April 28 at Cleveland Presbyterian Church in Abingdon. The entire service was dedicated to honoring Parker, who served as an infantryman during the invasion at Normandy, landing on Utah beach.

Parker, a D-Day veteran, shared his experiences of combat and survival during the war. He was shot in the foot and received a Purple Heart for his bravery. Despite the challenges he faced, Parker centered his life around serving others and eventually became a preacher in the Lord’s army.

The celebration included a Commending Resolution from the state of Virginia, a state flag flown over the state capitol in Richmond, a proclamation, and a key to the Town of Abingdon. Friends and family from across the country attended the event to honor Parker’s remarkable life and legacy.

Abingdon Mayor and Veterans Advisory Board member Amanda Pillion expressed admiration for Parker’s contributions and the impact he has had on the community. Parker’s grandson, Samuel Vorhes, described him as a kind and giving person who has always put others first.

As Parker reflected on his long life, he attributed his longevity to his faith in Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of believing in the word of Christ and getting saved as his advice for a fulfilling life.

The celebration was a testament to Parker’s resilience, courage, and dedication to serving others, making him a true hero and an inspiration to all who know him.
