Arriving at San Diego Airport: Energetic dance performance inspired by travelers

San Diego International Airport (SAN) has become a hub for creativity and entertainment with its unique performing arts residency program. Since its launch in 2016, the program has welcomed a variety of community groups to develop and showcase their work inside the airport terminals.

The latest group to join the program is DrumatiX, a creative percussion group that is currently on-site at the airport. The group is working on five new dances that will reflect the airport journey, from security to boarding a flight. DrumatiX was chosen for its ability to offer high-quality, interactive experiences that are inspired by the airport and its visitors.

According to Daniel Dennert, curator of the arts program at SAN, DrumatiX’s project is a perfect fit for the residency program. The group turns sounds they discover at the airport into rhythms and movements for their pieces, creating a unique and engaging experience for travelers passing through.

DrumatiX’s artistic director and choreographer, Noa Barankin, expressed excitement about the opportunity to immerse the group in the San Diego dance scene and challenge them with site-specific projects. The group has already begun engaging with airport visitors during their creative process, inviting them to participate and interact with the dancers.

As DrumatiX continues to work on their pieces inspired by the airport environment, they will be offering performances in late April and early May. Travelers passing through Terminal 2 can catch the group in action on April 29, May 3, May 6, and May 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to experience the unique blend of percussive dance and airport ambiance that DrumatiX has to offer.
