At last, Congress in America takes positive action for Ukraine | Global News

After months of bitter wrangling, the US House of Representatives finally passed a bill to provide $61 billion in military aid to Ukraine to defend itself against Russia. This rare show of bipartisan unity also included bills to support Israel, deter China from attacking Taiwan, and force the sale of TikTok to a non-Chinese owner. All four bills are expected to pass the Senate and be signed by President Joe Biden.

The delay in providing aid to Ukraine has been criticized as disgraceful, as Ukrainian forces have been struggling with shortages of ammunition and air defense interceptors. Russian invaders have been gaining territory and targeting Ukrainian cities, causing civilian casualties.

Once the bill becomes law, the Pentagon is prepared to deliver arms quickly to Ukraine, which will make a significant difference on the battlefield. However, challenges remain, including the time it will take to build and ship larger kits like anti-missile and anti-aircraft batteries.

The political landscape in America is complex, with previous attempts to authorize aid to Ukraine being sabotaged by former President Donald Trump. Despite some of his supporters being influenced by Russian propaganda, Trump ultimately did not derail the current bill, possibly out of concern for the geopolitical consequences.

It is crucial for both Republicans and Democrats to articulate why supporting Ukraine is in America’s self-interest, as it can help prevent further aggression from Russia and maintain global peace. With American and European support, Ukraine can hold the line against Russian aggression, but the political divisions in the West remain a potential obstacle to continued support.
