Flash floods triggered by heavy seasonal rains in western Afghanistan have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 50 lives, with many more individuals still unaccounted for, according to a Taliban official on Saturday. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue in the hard-hit province of Ghor.
Abdul Wahid Hamas, spokesman for the provincial governor, reported significant financial losses in Ghor, where thousands of homes and properties were damaged, and hundreds of hectares of agricultural land were destroyed by the devastating floods that struck on Friday. The capital city of Feroz Koh was particularly affected.
The Taliban’s government chief spokesman expressed condolences for the victims and called on responsible authorities to provide support to alleviate the suffering of those affected. He also appealed to humanitarian organizations and donors to assist the affected communities in their time of need.
This latest disaster comes on the heels of previous flooding incidents in Afghanistan, including one in the northern province of Baghlan that claimed over 300 lives and destroyed thousands of homes. The World Food Organization highlighted the dire situation faced by survivors, who have been left without homes, land, or livelihoods.
As the country grapples with the aftermath of these natural disasters, efforts are underway to provide aid and support to those affected by the floods. The international community is urged to come together to assist the people of Afghanistan in their time of need.
