At least 68 people killed in Afghanistan due to flooding

At least 50 people have tragically lost their lives in the western province of Ghor, Afghanistan, due to heavy seasonal rain causing devastating floods. The province’s spokesman, Abdul Wahid Hamas, reported significant financial losses as thousands of homes and properties were damaged, and hundreds of hectares of agricultural land were destroyed, including the capital city Feroz Koh.

In addition to the casualties in Ghor, eighteen people were killed and two others injured in the northern province of Farayab. The provincial governor’s spokesman, Esmatullah Moradi, noted damage to property and land across four districts, with over 300 animals also perishing in the floods.

The United Nations food agency highlighted Ghor as the most affected area, with 2,500 families impacted by the floods. The World Food Programme (WFP) has deployed assessment teams on the ground to provide assistance to those in need.

This recent disaster follows heavy rains in Afghanistan that have claimed the lives of over 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes, particularly in the northern province of Baghlan. The WFP emphasized the urgent need for aid, as survivors have been left without homes, land, or livelihoods.

The Taliban’s government chief spokesman expressed condolences for the loss of lives and called on responsible authorities and humanitarian organizations to provide support to alleviate the suffering of affected communities. The devastating floods have left a trail of destruction in their wake, underscoring the urgent need for assistance and relief efforts in the affected regions.
