Athletes and coaches in winter sports recognized for their achievements

The Hood River County School District board meeting on April 10 was filled with excitement as Human Resources Director Gus Hedberg and Hood River Valley High School Athletics Director Sean Mailey highlighted the impressive achievements of winter sports athletes.

Wrestler Natalia Solorio Campos shone by taking second at regionals and qualifying for the state tournament, while Connor Farlow secured sixth place at state and second in the league.

The swimming team also made waves with their outstanding performances. The girls team placed sixth and the boys ninth at the state level. Additionally, the girls’ 400 freestyle relay team clinched third place at state, and individual swimmers like Caiden Titus showcased their talent by earning top spots in various events.

The boys Nordic skiing team soared to second place at the state championships, with standout performances from Fergus Waag, Jayvin Lemieux, and Ashton Gilbert.

In alpine skiing, the boys team emerged as the Mt. Hood League Champions, while the girls team finished second at the state level. Emily Teets and Lars Welch stood out as individual champions in their respective categories.

The snowboarding team stole the show by winning the State Championship, with Nainoa Holland leading the charge as the overall state champion.

Even though the girls and boys basketball teams didn’t make it to the state tournament, players like Marina Castaneda and Sawyer Clemett received well-deserved recognition for their exceptional performances throughout the season.

Overall, the winter sports season was a resounding success for Hood River Valley High School, with athletes and coaches alike showcasing their dedication and talent on the field and on the slopes.
