Austin-East Magnet High School marks 145 years of excellence in Knoxville

Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville is gearing up to celebrate its 145 years of serving and anchoring the East Knoxville community. As the school prepares for the July 6 celebration, Knox News sat down with four influential leaders who have left a lasting impact on the school.

Juanita Cannon, known as the “hugging teacher,” devoted 40 years of her life to teaching, including serving as the principal of Vine Middle Magnet School. Her deep connections to Austin-East, where she was a student and later a teacher, have left a lasting legacy.

Charles Whitehead, who served as the principal from 1981 to 1994, was known for his firm but friendly leadership style. He implemented a dress code policy that students initially laughed at but eventually respected, showcasing his dedication to maintaining a positive school environment.

Blenza Davis, the assistant principal from 1981 to 1987, spent much of her time on the road collecting trophies and celebrating students’ victories in sports championships. She emphasized the importance of community support in providing resources for the school’s programs and initiatives.

Brian Hartsell, a former student turned principal, returned to Austin-East in 2004 to give back to the community that shaped him. His passion for education and dedication to the students have made a significant impact on the school.

These four leaders, each with their unique contributions, have played a vital role in shaping the legacy of Austin-East Magnet High School. As the school celebrates its 145th anniversary, their stories serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of education and community in East Knoxville.
