Bette Nash, the World’s Longest-Tenured Flight Attendant, Passes Away at 88

After an impressive career spanning nearly 67 years in the skies, Bette Nash, the world’s longest-tenured flight attendant, has passed away at the age of 88. Nash, who worked for American Airlines, never officially retired from her role and continued to serve passengers until her recent battle with breast cancer.

Nash began her career in 1957 with Eastern Airlines, which later became American Airlines. Despite having the opportunity to choose any route in the world, Nash primarily worked the DC-NY-Boston Shuttle so she could be home every night to care for her son who has Down syndrome. In 2022, she was honored with the Guinness World Record title for longest-serving flight attendant.

Throughout her career, Nash witnessed significant changes in the aviation industry. She recalled a time when passengers would purchase life insurance from a vending machine before boarding, and flights between New York and Washington, D.C., cost only $12. Nash also reflected on the strict restrictions flight attendants faced, including weight and personal relationship requirements.

Despite the challenges she faced, Nash remained dedicated to her role and continued to attend regular flight attendant training per Federal Aviation Administration rules. American Airlines paid tribute to Nash, calling her an industry icon and a role model for all flight attendants.
