After nearly two decades of service, New Democrat MLA for Kootenay West and Finance Minister Katrine Conroy has announced that she will not be running in the upcoming provincial election. The 66-year-old politician made the emotional announcement in Castlegar, citing a desire to enjoy her retirement years and spend more time with her family.
Conroy, who has been a member of the B.C. Legislature for 19 years, has held various cabinet positions since 2017, including Minister of Children and Family Development, Minister of Forests, and most recently, Minister of Finance. She expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her constituents and colleagues throughout her political career.
The decision to step down marks the end of a political legacy for the Conroy family, as there has been a Conroy on the ballot in the West Kootenay since 1986. Conroy’s husband, Ed, previously served as the MLA for Rossland-Trail, while she followed in his footsteps as an MLA in the West Kootenay in 2005.
During her time in office, Conroy highlighted achievements such as providing free college education for kids in care, implementing the NDP’s childcare initiative, and establishing the Office of the Senior’s Advocate. She also expressed a desire to see progress on the new Columbia River Treaty before her departure.
Despite her impending retirement from politics, Conroy will continue in her current roles until the fall election, ensuring a smooth transition for her constituents and the province. Her departure marks the end of an era for the West Kootenay region, as a dedicated public servant prepares to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders.
