Balochistan Ravaged by Devastating Flash Floods and Relentless Rainfall
Balochistan, a province in southwestern Pakistan, is currently facing a catastrophic situation as relentless rainfall and flash floods wreak havoc across various districts. According to a report by ARY News, the region is grappling with severe flooding that has caused widespread destruction and displacement of communities.
In Harnai and its surrounding areas, overflowing rivers and nullahs have led to the disruption of crucial land links, including the Harnai-Quetta-Punjab highway, which has been impassable for four consecutive days. The Sibi-Harnai railway section has also been severely affected, with train services suspended due to damage to railway tracks.
Chagai district witnessed chaos as vehicles carrying picnickers were swept away by floodwaters, prompting passengers to seek refuge in nearby hills. In Toba Kakari, Pishin, a local dam faced a breach, necessitating urgent action from authorities to reinforce it with earthfilling.
The situation in Naseerabad district is equally dire, with floodwaters inundating Bala Nari and forcing residents to evacuate to safer areas. Additionally, extensive flooding has devastated wheat crops in Mithri, exacerbating agricultural losses in the region.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued grim forecasts, predicting more rainfall in Balochistan until April 19. Recent data shows significant precipitation in various districts, with Quetta, Sibbi, Dalbandin, and Zhob receiving substantial amounts of rainfall.
Acknowledging the severity of the crisis, the Balochistan government has declared a state of emergency in response to the continuous heavy rains that have caused casualties and injuries. The situation is further compounded by strong winds and gusts in Gwadar, Kech, Panjgur, and Turbat, posing additional challenges for affected communities.
