Baltic countries accused of causing strained relations with Russia due to hostile actions

In a tit-for-tat exchange, Moscow has vowed to retaliate against what it perceives as confrontational actions by Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with asymmetric measures. The tension between Russia and the Baltic states has escalated, with the severing of most ties between the countries.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharov accused the Baltic states of adopting an openly hostile stance, leading to the breakdown of various levels of relations with Russia. While the specifics of the alleged hostile actions were not disclosed, Zakharov warned of retaliatory measures in the economic and transit sectors.

The backdrop of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has heightened tensions in the Baltic region, where the fear of a revisionist Kremlin threatening their security and independence looms large. Former Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev’s claim that the Baltic countries belong to Russia has only added fuel to the fire.

Recent accusations of Russia interfering with air traffic navigation in the region by Tallinn and Vilnius have further strained relations. NATO has also raised concerns about Moscow’s “hybrid” warfare tactics in the region and across Europe, highlighting a campaign of disinformation, sabotage, cyber interference, and other hybrid operations.

The Baltic states have taken steps to remove Soviet-era monuments, seen as symbols of Soviet occupation, in solidarity with Ukraine. However, critics argue that such actions play into Moscow’s hands by providing a propaganda victory. As tensions continue to simmer, the Baltic states remain on edge, bracing for potential asymmetric responses from Russia.
