Baltic Sea countries cautious in response to Russian proposal to alter maritime border

Leaders around the Baltic Sea are on edge following reports that Russia may be considering revising the borders of its territorial waters in the region. The draft proposal, reported by Russian media, suggests updating the coordinates used to measure the strip of territorial waters off Russia’s mainland coast and islands in the Baltic Sea. While it is unclear if the proposed changes would shift the border or simply clarify it, the reaction from neighboring countries has been one of caution and concern.

Lithuania’s foreign minister labeled the proposal as an “obvious escalation” that requires a firm response, while Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the importance of Russia adhering to international conventions. Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen expressed belief that it was a routine act by Russia rather than a provocation, but emphasized the need for adherence to international agreements.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, visiting Lithuania, echoed concerns about Russia’s intentions, calling it a form of “hybrid warfare.” Lithuania has summoned the Russian representative for an explanation, although Russia has denied any intention to revise the border or the width of its territorial waters.

The Baltic Sea region has been tense since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Finland and Sweden joining NATO in response. The Baltic Sea, crucial for Russia’s access to St. Petersburg and its Kaliningrad enclave, is now surrounded by NATO members.
