Bangladesh Faces Severe Heatwave, Primary Schools Closed Again

DHAKA (Reuters) – As temperatures soared above 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in Bangladesh, the government made the decision to once again close all primary schools across the country and educational institutions in nearly half of the districts, including the capital city of Dhaka.

Last week, schools had reopened despite the scorching heat, but the persistent high temperatures led to lower attendance rates. The Ministry of Education announced that all government primary schools will remain closed until Thursday, and educational institutions in 27 out of 64 districts will be shut on Tuesday.

Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel stated that if temperatures exceed 42 degrees in any district, schools in that area will be closed. This move comes as scientists point to climate change as a factor contributing to more frequent and severe heatwaves during the summer months.

In the midst of the heatwave, citizens have been advised to stay indoors during the day. However, for outdoor workers like rickshaw drivers, such as Mohammed Shameem and Shaheb Ali, there is little respite. They continue to brave the scorching sun in search of passengers, despite the challenging conditions.

“I have never experienced such heat in my life. People are suffering a lot,” said Shaheb Ali, reflecting the struggles faced by many in Dhaka during this intense heatwave.

As the heatwave persists, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure the well-being of the population.
