Baseball history center proposal presented to Park and Rec Commission | Local News, Sports, Employment

The New Ulm Baseball Association (NUBA) presented a proposal to the New Ulm Park and Rec Commission for a potential local baseball history center. The center would be located along the third base line north of the bleachers and on the hillside, measuring 24 ft by 80 ft. It would include a museum, meeting room, reception area, kitchen, office, storage space, bathroom, and a viewing deck.

NUBA would secure the funding to build and maintain the center, which would be on city property. While the project is still in the early stages, NUBA President Bob Skillings emphasized the importance of celebrating New Ulm’s rich baseball history.

Commissioners raised concerns about potential obstructions to viewing from the bleachers and the feasibility of building on the hillside. Building Inspector Ellwood Zabel highlighted the need for a zero-foot setback off the property line and utility considerations.

Despite these challenges, Commissioner Jim Jensen expressed support for the history center, citing the educational value and potential to draw more people to the park. Commission Chair Carisa Buegler raised concerns about the project’s long-term sustainability.

No formal decisions were made during the work session, as the project is still in the early planning stages. NUBA will continue to work on the details and address any concerns raised by the commission. The proposed history center could be a valuable addition to New Ulm’s baseball community, celebrating its long and successful history.
