Bassem Youssef advises Arabs to refrain from emotional responses when discussing causes at Arab Media Forum

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dr. Bassem Youssef, a prominent media personality known for his satirical approach to addressing political and social issues, recently spoke at the 22nd Arab Media Forum (AMF) on the topic of The Arab World Through the Western Media Lens. Youssef highlighted the stereotypical portrayal of Arabs in Western media and emphasized the need for a strategic approach in addressing Western audiences.

The session, attended by distinguished guests including Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to His Highness the UAE President, and Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, Vice Chairperson of the Dubai Media Council, focused on the challenges faced by Arabs in the media landscape. Youssef pointed out that Western media often stereotype Arabs as emotional and easily provoked, particularly when it comes to discussing sensitive topics like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Known as ‘Egypt’s Jon Stewart’ for his use of satire to critique the Egyptian government during the revolution, Youssef has been a vocal advocate for changing the narrative surrounding Arabs in Western media. In a conversation with Jessica Azar of MTV, he emphasized the role of comedy in challenging these stereotypes and promoting a more nuanced understanding of Arab issues.

Youssef’s outspoken views have not come without consequences, as he revealed that his criticism of Western media’s double standards has cost him opportunities, including a role in a ‘Superman’ movie. Despite this, he remains committed to using his platform to voice his opinions and challenge prevailing narratives.

In an effort to adapt to the changing media landscape and the shortened attention spans of modern audiences, Youssef has shifted his communication strategy to focus on creating short, impactful clips of his interviews. He stressed the importance of backing up his points with evidence and avoiding emotional reactions when discussing sensitive topics.

As an American citizen raising his children in the United States, Youssef expressed his commitment to staying and working towards changing the perspective about the Arab world. He urged Arabs to adopt a more assertive and direct approach in their communication with Western audiences, emphasizing the need to speak to the point without getting caught up in emotional responses.

Overall, Youssef’s insights at the Arab Media Forum shed light on the challenges faced by Arabs in Western media and the importance of adopting a strategic and nuanced approach in addressing these issues. By using comedy and evidence-based arguments, Youssef continues to be a powerful voice in reshaping the narrative surrounding Arabs in the global media landscape.
