BC residents criticize Delta mayor for upcoming trip and travel costs

Delta Mayor George Harvie is facing backlash for his decision to proceed with a planned trip to Amsterdam in June, despite calls for him to cancel the trip. The outrage intensified with the release of Harvie’s expenses for the first few months of 2024, totaling over $32,000. These expenses include a hefty $21,000 for a flight to Asia, $2,700 for accommodation and per diems, and a $5,300 airfare for the upcoming trip to Amsterdam.

Critics, including Carson Binda of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, have condemned Harvie’s decision to proceed with the trip, citing it as an unnecessary expense to taxpayers. Despite being removed from the Metro Vancouver board, Harvie was allowed to stay on until July 1 to attend a conference in Amsterdam on diking systems.

New Westminster City Councillor Daniel Fontaine called on Metro Vancouver board members to intervene and prevent Harvie from going on the trip. Fontaine emphasized the need for financial oversight to prevent such extravagant expenses and cost overruns, pointing to past controversies within the district.

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs reassured the public that they can lodge complaints about public expenditures and financial irregularities, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in local government spending.
