In a thrilling championship match that went into quadruple overtime, Baldwin High School’s Ava Castillo scored the game-winning goal to secure a 10-9 victory over Kamehameha Maui in the Maui Interscholastic League girls water polo title game.
Castillo, a senior captain, received a pass from teammate Jade Brown and found the back of the net with just 61 seconds left in the fourth overtime period. The Bears’ win marked their second consecutive MIL title and their fifth in the last six seasons.
The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams showcasing their skill and determination. Kamehameha Maui, despite never having won an MIL water polo title, put up a tough fight and forced the championship showdown with a triple-overtime win in the tournament final.
Castillo, reflecting on her game-winning goal, expressed pride in her team’s progress throughout the season. The Bears had to overcome a late surge from Kamehameha Maui, who scored three goals in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Ultimately, it was Castillo’s resilience and determination that sealed the victory for Baldwin. The team’s goalkeeper, Mariah Kuehu, also played a crucial role in the win, making key saves to keep the Bears in the game.
With this win, Baldwin advances to the HHSAA girls water polo championships, while Kamehameha Maui will also compete in the state tournament for the first time since 2012. Both teams displayed incredible sportsmanship and skill, making for an unforgettable championship match.
