Baldwin High School’s baseball team secured a spot in the Maui Interscholastic League Division I tournament final with a resounding 6-0 victory over Kamehameha Maui on Friday night at Maehara Stadium. The standout moment of the game came when senior catcher Isaiah “Anu” Chaves blasted a solo home run over the left-field fence, only the second homer of the season at Maehara Stadium.
Chaves, who has been a key player for the Bears for three years, expressed his excitement about the crucial home run, stating, “It felt great, big for the team. I knew we needed to score some runs, glad I got my pitch, hit it well.” The win propels Baldwin into the tournament final against top-seeded Maui High, with both teams boasting an impressive 11-2 record.
The Bears, who have won 12 consecutive MIL titles, are determined to continue their winning streak, while Maui High aims to clinch the MIL title for the first time since 2008. Baldwin’s starting pitcher, Kade Fujioka, delivered a strong performance, allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings.
The victory was a team effort, with Jevon Raboy adding a run with a single in the sixth inning to extend the Bears’ lead to 6-0. Baldwin’s early offensive dominance, highlighted by Kaden Anderson’s two-run triple in the first inning, set the tone for the game.
With their eyes set on a different prize, Baldwin looks ahead to the tournament final against Maui High, ready to compete and play with pride. The Bears’ camaraderie and determination, exemplified by Chaves and Fujioka’s strong partnership, will be crucial as they aim to secure another MIL title.
