The Beijing auto show is currently showcasing China’s vision of the future of automobiles, with a focus on electrification and digital connectivity. A total of 117 new models are being unveiled at Auto China 2024, ranging from cutting-edge designs to more subtle innovations.
One of the standout moments at the show was the debut of Xiaomi’s first car, the SU7, which has already received over 75,000 orders since its launch. Priced between $29,800-$41,400, Xiaomi’s entry into the car market highlights the growing trend of consumer technology companies expanding into the automotive industry to offer seamless connectivity across devices.
Other notable reveals at the show include Zeekr’s Mix, an electric vehicle with a versatile interior that can transform into a living space while parked. Designed for younger families, the Mix features swiveling seats and a table for activities like card games or enjoying a meal.
In addition to electric vehicles, hybrids are also gaining traction in China, with Chery Automobile Co. showcasing its EXEED Yaoguang C-DM hybrid SUV alongside electric models. The market for hybrids is seen as a growth opportunity, with 2.6 million units sold in China last year.
Luxury electric vehicle maker BYD is targeting the high-end market with its Yangwang brand, introducing the U8 off-road SUV priced at $150,000. Designed for rugged conditions, the U8 comes with a satellite phone and the option to add a built-in drone system for an additional cost.
Volvo, under China’s Geely group, presented the user-friendly EX30 electric SUV at the show, emphasizing simplicity and safety in design. Priced between $29,000-$36,000, the EX30 aims to provide a clear and intuitive user experience for consumers overwhelmed by technology in the EV market.
