Belchertown’s Girls Tennis Team Dominates in State Tournament Opener
The Belchertown girls tennis team showcased their dominance in the MIAA Round of 32 match against No. 24 Pentucket on Wednesday afternoon. Ranked No. 9 in Division 3, the Orioles swept Pentucket 5-0 in a commanding fashion at Wilbraham Monson to kick off their state tournament run.
Leading the charge was Ava Shea at first singles, who didn’t drop a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win against Katie Hella. Anna Stamp and Gianna Picardi also secured wins at second and third singles, respectively, to contribute to the clean sweep in the singles matches.
In doubles, Mia Corish and Emilee Chaisson displayed their skills at first doubles, securing a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Kasey Gibbons and Amanda Murray mirrored their success at second doubles, clinching a 6-4, 6-0 win to seal the Orioles’ triumph over Pentucket.
With this impressive victory, Belchertown advances to face the winner of the Round of 32 match between No. 8 Watertown and No. 25 St. Mary. A potential upset win in the next round could see the Orioles hosting the Round of 16 match.
On the boys tennis front, Northampton secured a 4-1 win over Oliver Ames, while Amherst fell to Hingham 5-0. Belchertown’s boys team faced a tough loss to Old Rochester, marking the end of their remarkable season. The Orioles finished as the Western Mass. Class B runner-up, with head coach Zach Siano likely coaching his last match at Belchertown.
