Beloved Former Tennis Coach and Teacher at Audubon, Kay Azar, Passes Away at 80

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Kay Ann Azar, a beloved tennis coach at Audubon Junior-Senior High School, passed away on May 7 at the age of 80 after suffering a stroke. Azar was a pioneer in the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association and dedicated 43 years to teaching health and physical education at Audubon.

Last September, the school honored Azar by renaming the tennis courts as the “Kay Azar Tennis Courts” with a permanent sign. Throughout her coaching career, Azar led the varsity tennis program to 385 wins, including three South Jersey titles and a state runner-up finish.

Azar was not only a successful coach but also a founding member of the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association, where she played a key role in developing the organization’s by-laws and leading the scholarship committee. Her impact on the South Jersey tennis community was profound, as she was remembered as a mentor, friend, and role model by many.

In addition to her coaching achievements, Azar made significant contributions off the court by starting an adaptive physical education program for students with disabilities at the school. She also dedicated her time to organizing events for senior citizens and retirement dinners for over two decades.

Azar’s legacy extends beyond the tennis court and classroom, as she leaves behind a loving family, including her daughter, son, six grandchildren, and a brother. Her commitment to excellence, sportsmanship, and community service will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
