Benny Gantz of Israel announces June 8 deadline for new Gaza war plan adoption

Centrist member of Israel’s three-member war cabinet, Benny Ganz, has issued a threat to resign if the government does not adopt his six-point plan for the Gaza operation by 8 June. This announcement has further deepened the divide within Israel’s leadership, which has been grappling with a prolonged war that has yet to achieve its stated goals of dismantling Hamas and returning hostages abducted in the militant group’s 7 October attack.

Ganz’s six-point plan includes the return of the hostages, ending Hamas’ rule, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, and establishing an international administration of civilian affairs. Additionally, the plan supports efforts to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia and expand military service to all Israelis.

“If you choose the path of fanatics and lead the entire nation to the abyss, we will be forced to quit the government,” Ganz stated, emphasizing the seriousness of his ultimatum.

Ganz’s potential resignation would leave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even more reliant on far-right allies who advocate for a hardline approach in negotiations over a ceasefire and hostage release. The current Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has also expressed his unwillingness to remain in his post if Israel chooses to reoccupy Gaza, further complicating the government’s stance on the conflict.

Critics of Netanyahu have accused him of prolonging the war for personal and political reasons, a claim he vehemently denies. The recent developments in the war cabinet highlight the internal tensions and differing approaches within Israel’s leadership as they navigate the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
