Bernama to Monitor AI Usage for Delivering Reliable News to the Public

The Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) has raised concerns about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in news production, emphasizing the need for monitoring to ensure the safety, reliability, and integrity of information delivered to the public. PWP President Syed Azlan Sayid Hizar highlighted the importance of adhering to ethical guidelines in cyber journalism when utilizing AI technology.

Speaking to Bernama, Syed Azlan emphasized the significance of transparency and accountability in the use of AI technology to produce quality news. He suggested that Malaysia should focus on promoting the cyber journalism code of ethics among students, especially with the rise of writing applications like ChatGPT and Smodin.

In conjunction with the upcoming National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 celebration, themed ‘Etika Teras Kewartawanan Mapan’, PWP recommended collaboration between the government, media associations, academics, and NGOs to enhance the monitoring and implementation of cyber journalism ethics. Syed Azlan expressed hope that this cooperation would ensure the development of AI technology in news production serves the interests of Malaysian society.

As part of their efforts, PWP plans to introduce an education and training program on journalists’ code of ethics for school students in Perlis. By teaching the younger generation about ethical guidelines in cyber journalism, they aim to promote responsible use of AI technology for news production.

HAWANA 2024 will feature events such as the Sarawak Media Conference and the ‘Jelajah Siswa’ program, with the launching ceremony to be officiated by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. The annual celebration of National Journalists’ Day on May 29 commemorates the first publication of the Utusan Melayu newspaper in 1939.
