LONDON – Renowned actor Bernard Hill, known for his powerful performances in “The Lord of the Rings” and “Titanic,” has passed away at the age of 79. Hill’s agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed the sad news on Sunday morning.
Hill gained fame for his role as Theoden, King of Rohan, in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, starting with “The Two Towers” in 2002. His iconic portrayal in “The Return of the King” earned the film 11 Oscars, with one of the most memorable scenes being his rousing battle cry that inspired his troops to charge into battle.
In “Titanic,” Hill played the role of Captain Edward Smith, adding depth to the tragic romance alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. His portrayal of the doomed captain as the ship sank left a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
Prior to his blockbuster film roles, Hill made a name for himself in the 1982 British TV miniseries “Boys From the Blackstuff,” earning critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for his role as Yosser Hughes.
Hill’s passing coincided with the airing of the second series of the BBC drama “The Responder,” in which he played a significant role. Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, praised Hill’s incredible talent and expressed condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.
