Bernie Sanders condemns Netanyahu for response to US campus protests

Senator Bernie Sanders Pushes Back Against Netanyahu’s Accusations of Antisemitism

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is standing up against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent accusations of antisemitism towards US college students protesting against the war in Gaza. In a video released by Netanyahu’s office, the Israeli leader referred to the protesters as “antisemitic mobs” and compared their actions to events in German universities in the 1930s.

Senator Sanders, a prominent Jewish lawmaker, responded to Netanyahu’s claims in a statement, directly refuting the accusations and addressing the Israeli leader by name. Sanders stated that it is not antisemitic to criticize the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, highlighting the high number of Palestinian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

The protests have spread to multiple US universities, including Yale, Columbia University, and the University of Southern California, leading to arrests and clashes with riot police. US House Speaker Mike Johnson also echoed Netanyahu’s criticisms during a visit to Columbia, where he faced backlash from demonstrators.

Republicans have seized on the protests to accuse Democrats of supporting antisemitism, while also contrasting President Joe Biden’s calls for more humanitarian aid to Gaza with former President Donald Trump’s unwavering support for Israel. Trump, who recently called for an end to the war in Gaza, has been criticized for his silence on Israeli actions during his time in office.

Sanders’ strong response to Netanyahu’s accusations highlights the ongoing debate surrounding US support for Israel and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
