After 17 years of teaching social studies at Fredonia High School, beloved coach Nick Bertrando is making a transition to the Physical Education Department. Bertrando, who has been the varsity boys basketball coach since 2018, will be taking on a new role as a Physical Education Teacher starting next school year.

Bertrando expressed his excitement about the opportunity to impact more lives in a different capacity. He will be filling the shoes of Alex Conti, who has been in the position for the past 29 years. Bertrando aims to continue the strong P.E. tradition at Fredonia while incorporating modern skills that students need in the 21st century.

Board of Education member Sheila Hahn praised Bertrando for the positive influence he has had on her son, who played on the varsity basketball team. Hahn highlighted Bertrando’s teachings of character, discipline, respect, and effort, emphasizing the impact he has had on her son’s life.

In addition to his coaching success, Bertrando has also excelled in the classroom. He co-created a new course on Personal Fitness and Nutrition, which received recognition from the New York State School Boards Association. Despite leaving a gap in the Social Studies Department, Bertrando’s new role is seen as a positive move for the District.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox and High School Principal Darrin Paschke both expressed their support for Bertrando’s transition, noting his value to the school community. Paschke highlighted the positive impact Bertrando and another recent hire will bring to the Physical Education Department, emphasizing the excitement surrounding Bertrando’s new role as a P.E. Teacher.
