Billionaire Jeff Bezos Pledges $100 Million for AI Solutions to Climate Change
In a bold move to tackle climate change, Jeff Bezos’s Bezos Earth Fund announced a $100 million donation towards the “AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge.” This initiative aims to harness the power of modern AI technology to address environmental issues and inspire collaboration between environmental groups and AI providers.
The competition will consist of multiple rounds focusing on areas such as sustainable proteins, biodiversity conservation, and power grid optimization. Additionally, there will be a “Wild Card” category for innovative proposals outside the designated areas of focus.
The funding will be divided into two phases per round, with seed grants awarded to promising AI ideas in the first phase, and grants of up to $2 million available in the second phase. Applicants from universities, NGOs, private companies, and organizations are encouraged to participate, with applications opening in May 2024.
Bezos Earth Fund President and CEO Dr. Andrew Steer emphasized the potential of AI to address complex challenges, stating, “The arrival of AI will potentially help solve very difficult challenges. With this program, we hope to make a helpful contribution.”
This latest donation follows Bezos’s recent philanthropic efforts, including awarding Eva Longoria and Admiral Bill McRaven $50 million each for their chosen charities. Bezos, who plans to give away most of his wealth in his lifetime, currently boasts a net worth of approximately $203 billion.
