President Joe Biden’s administration is making a significant push to improve semiconductor manufacturing by utilizing digital twins, virtual models that simulate physical objects and systems. This innovative approach allows for testing and optimizing processes without disrupting production, a game-changer for industries like auto manufacturing.

The administration has announced that it will be accepting applications for a total of $285 million in funding to support research into semiconductor digital twin development, the creation of combined physical and digital facilities, industry demonstration projects, workforce training, and the operation of a new CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute.

During a recent press briefing, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology Laurie E. Locascio highlighted the potential benefits of digital twins, including reduced chip development costs and more collaborative processes in chip design and development. She emphasized the need for greater investment in this technology, noting that no country has yet fully unlocked its potential.

This funding is part of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, a $280 billion bill aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor manufacturing. President Biden has expressed concern over the decline in U.S. semiconductor production, from 40% globally to less than 10%. The administration is also focused on reducing the concentration of semiconductor manufacturing in one part of the world, likely referring to China.

Interested organizations, including nonprofits, universities, governments, and for-profit companies based in the United States, can apply for funding. An informational webinar will be held on May 8 to provide more details on the application process. This initiative represents a significant step towards revitalizing the semiconductor industry and strengthening America’s technological capabilities.
