Biden Administration to Release 1 Million Barrels of Gasoline

The Biden administration has taken a proactive step to address rising gasoline prices by announcing the sale of one million barrels of gasoline from a strategic reserve in the Northeast. This move is aimed at keeping gasoline prices stable for consumers as they prepare for the July 4 holiday.

The sale of the government-owned stock, mandated by Congress in a spending bill passed in March, will be conducted through a competitive bidding process in quantities of 100,000 barrels. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm emphasized that the administration is focused on lowering prices at the pump for American families, especially as summer driving season kicks off.

While the impact of this sale on gasoline prices may be limited due to the relatively small quantity compared to total U.S. consumption, it is part of a broader effort by President Biden to address energy costs. Last year, the U.S. consumed around nine million barrels of gasoline per day on average, with the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions accounting for a significant portion.

Gasoline prices have been moderating in recent weeks, thanks in part to a fall in oil prices and reduced fears of supply disruptions from the Middle East. The Biden administration’s decision to sell gasoline from the strategic reserve is just one of several measures taken to stabilize energy costs and ensure a smooth summer driving season for consumers.
