President Joe Biden reiterated his stance on the ongoing student-led demonstrations against Israel’s war on Gaza, stating that the protests have not influenced his approach to the region. In a brief response to a reporter’s question during an unscheduled speech at the White House, Biden made it clear that the demonstrations have not prompted him to reconsider his Middle East policy.
“The American people are heard, in fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how Americans respond to consequential issues. But neither are we a lawless country. We’re a civil society, and order must prevail,” Biden emphasized.
The President highlighted the importance of peaceful protest while condemning violent actions such as vandalism, trespassing, and property destruction. He emphasized that dissent is essential to democracy but should never lead to disorder or the denial of others’ rights.
The comments from Biden come in the wake of a series of crackdowns on college campuses where pro-Palestinian students have been met with force. At the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), police dismantled an encampment set up by students, leading to over 130 arrests. The police action followed a violent attack by a pro-Israel group on the student encampment, resulting in clashes and chaos on campus.
The events at UCLA have sparked outrage and prompted the university to launch an independent investigation into the actions of both the students and law enforcement. Similar incidents have occurred at other universities across the country, with tensions escalating between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups.
Nationwide demonstrations gained momentum after Columbia University requested the New York Police Department to remove students staging an encampment on campus grounds. Despite over 100 arrests, the protesters regrouped and continued their sit-in. However, they were eventually removed by police from their second location, prompting the school to request a police presence until after graduation ceremonies.
When asked if the National Guard should intervene to disperse the demonstrations, Biden firmly stated, “No.” The President’s stance reflects his commitment to upholding the right to peaceful protest while maintaining order and civility in society.
As the situation on college campuses remains tense, with conflicting ideologies clashing, the Biden administration faces the challenge of balancing free speech rights with public safety concerns. The ongoing protests serve as a reminder of the complex and deeply rooted divisions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both domestically and internationally.
