Biden Aide: Israel’s Military Actions in Rafah Won’t Eliminate Hamas

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a recent press conference, Pentagon spokesperson Mr. Kirby addressed concerns about the United States’ relationship with Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He emphasized that the US is not abandoning its ally, citing President Biden’s recent visit to Israel and the support provided in terms of funding, military expertise, and fighter pilots to combat Iranian threats.

Mr. Kirby highlighted the belief that Israel has been effectively pressuring Hamas and emphasized the importance of finding alternative strategies to target the remaining Hamas forces in Rafah. He assured that the US is still collaborating with Israel to help defeat Hamas, focusing on securing the Gaza-Egypt border and targeting Hamas leaders.

While acknowledging the temporary pause in certain weapons shipments to Israel, Mr. Kirby emphasized that Israel continues to receive the majority of its defense needs and will receive ongoing support through a recent funding package passed by Congress. This decision to pause weapons shipments has underscored tensions between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has expressed determination to proceed with military actions in Rafah even without global support.

In response, Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s readiness to stand alone if necessary, expressing determination to fight with all available resources. As Israeli forces intensify targeted strikes in Rafah and prepare for potential ground operations, the situation remains tense with the possibility of further escalation in the conflict.
