Biden Commemorates Brown v. Board of Education Anniversary

President Biden marked the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case by meeting with plaintiffs and their families at the White House. This event was part of his efforts to strengthen support among Black Americans, a key demographic that helped secure his victory in the 2020 election.

During the meeting, President Biden expressed gratitude to the litigants for their bravery in challenging racial segregation in schools, a move that ultimately led to the ruling that such practices were unconstitutional. Cheryl Brown Henderson, the daughter of lead plaintiff Oliver L. Brown, highlighted the risks these individuals took during a time when Jim Crow laws were still prevalent.

The Oval Office gathering was just one of several events planned to showcase President Biden’s commitment to the Black community. These efforts will culminate in a commencement address at Morehouse College, a historically Black institution with a rich legacy of civil rights activism.

While the President’s administration touts achievements such as a 60% increase in Black household wealth and record-low Black unemployment rates, recent polls suggest that there is growing discontent among young, Black, and Hispanic voters. Representative James E. Clyburn, a key supporter of President Biden, believes that the erosion of Black support may be overstated, citing policies aimed at addressing issues like lead poisoning and high insulin costs within Black communities.

President Biden’s public recognition of the Brown v. Board of Education plaintiffs comes at a time when Black history is facing challenges. Janai S. Nelson of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by these individuals, who defied a system designed for their subjugation with courage and determination. President Biden’s acknowledgment of their contributions serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality in America.
