President Joe Biden has come under scrutiny for using nearly $2 million raised by the Democratic National Committee to pay his legal bills, a move that has drawn criticism from his political opponents. The DNC paid $1.1 million to Bob Bauer PLLC, the firm of a veteran political lawyer hired to defend Biden in an investigation over his mishandling of classified documents. Special counsel Robert Hur ultimately chose not to prosecute Biden, citing a lack of evidence to secure a conviction.

Another firm, Hemenway & Barnes LLP, also received increased payments starting in July 2023 for representing Biden in legal matters. The DNC’s payments to these firms have raised questions about Biden’s use of political donations for personal legal expenses, especially in light of his previous criticisms of Republican rival Donald Trump for similar actions.

In contrast, Trump has used his leadership political action committee to pay $64 million to lawyers representing him and his allies in various criminal and civil cases. Trump argues that these cases are politically motivated, while Democrats have pointed out that the DNC does not use grassroots donors’ money for legal bills, unlike Trump who solicits small-dollar donors for his legal defense fund.

The controversy surrounding Biden’s use of DNC funds for legal expenses has provided Trump with a political opening to criticize his actions as hypocritical. As both politicians continue to navigate legal challenges, their handling of legal expenses has become a point of contention within their respective parties.
