Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Joe Biden delivered a powerful commencement address to the graduating class at the US Military Academy in West Point, New York, on May 25, 2024. In his speech, Biden highlighted the expansion of NATO, his administration’s actions in the Middle East, and the progress made in lowering military sexual assaults.

Biden emphasized the importance of defending democracy and preserving the NATO alliance, underscoring values that Democrats believe are at risk. He urged the graduating cadets to take up the mantle of protecting and preserving American democracy, stating, “Every generation has an obligation to defend it, to protect it, to preserve it, to choose it. Now it’s your turn.”

The President also reiterated the US’ support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, declaring, “We are standing strong with Ukraine and we will stand with them.” He praised NATO as the “greatest defense alliance in the history of the world,” highlighting the alliance’s strength and resilience in the face of external threats.

Addressing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Biden acknowledged the challenges of supporting Israel while also recognizing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He commended the US military for its efforts in building a temporary pier off the shore of Gaza, which facilitated the delivery of life-saving aid to Palestinians.

In his address, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to using force to protect the nation, stating, “If anyone targets American troops, we will deliver justice to them.” He highlighted his administration’s response to threats against US service members, including ordering drone strikes against Iranian-backed militants in retaliation for the killing of three US service members in Jordan.

Biden also addressed the issue of sexual harassment in the military, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for all members of the armed forces. He praised the reduction in reported incidents of sexual assault and harassment in the military, stating, “It’s long past time to end the scourge of sexual violence in the military once and for all, and we can do this.”

Overall, President Biden’s commencement address at West Point showcased his administration’s commitment to defending democracy, supporting allies, and addressing critical issues within the military. The speech served as a call to action for the graduating cadets to uphold the values of democracy and continue the tradition of service and sacrifice in defense of the nation.
