Biden hosts grand state dinner for Kenyan leader, showcasing strong diplomatic ties

President William Ruto of Kenya was welcomed with open arms in Washington, D.C., as he became the first African leader in nearly two decades to receive an official state visit to the White House. The grand event, marked by a lavish state dinner, was attended by around 500 guests, including prominent figures such as former President Bill Clinton, former First Lady Hillary Clinton, and actor LeVar Burton.

The state dinner, the largest of President Joe Biden’s tenure, aimed to strengthen bilateral ties between the US and Kenya, recognizing Kenya’s growing influence both in Africa and globally. The evening began with a cocktail reception on the White House terrace before guests were ushered into a stunning pavilion on the lawn, adorned with candles and reflective metallic strips to enhance the ambiance.

The menu for the evening, crafted by White House Executive Chef Cris Comerfield, featured exquisite dishes such as chilled green tomato soup, lobster poached in butter, and a decadent white chocolate dessert. Live entertainment was provided by country music star Brad Paisley and the Howard University gospel choir, reflecting the musical preferences of the honored guests.

During the visit, President Biden praised President Ruto for his leadership and announced Kenya’s designation as a major non-NATO US ally, a significant milestone in the countries’ relationship. The leaders also unveiled the “Nairobi-Washington Vision,” a collaborative effort to address debt relief and support for developing nations.
