President Joe Biden took center stage at the annual White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night, delivering a series of jabs aimed at his opponent and likely Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
In his remarks to members of the White House Correspondents Association, politicians, and current members of his administration, President Biden didn’t hold back. He made a reference to Mr. Trump’s ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan, jokingly saying, “I’ve had a great stretch since the State of the Union, but Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it Stormy weather,” in a nod to the Stormy Daniels scandal.
The president continued to poke fun at Mr. Trump, calling him “Sleepy Don” for falling asleep in Manhattan Criminal Court and likening him to a six-year-old. The jokes were met with laughter and “oohs” from the audience.
Even the host of the evening, SNL cast member Colin Jost, couldn’t resist poking fun at Mr. Trump’s trial, joking about the former president falling asleep in court every morning.
The annual dinner is known for its lighthearted roasting of politicians and public figures, as well as a celebration of the journalists who cover the White House year-round. During Mr. Trump’s time in office, he famously refused to attend the dinner and barred his administration staff from going, citing his aversion to criticism.
In response to the jokes made at his expense, Mr. Trump took to social media to criticize the event, calling it “really bad” and claiming that both Colin Jost and President Biden were “disasters.” Despite the backlash, it was clear that President Biden and his fellow speakers had succeeded in entertaining the crowd and keeping the tradition of the White House Correspondents’ dinner alive.
