Biden labels Japan, India, Russia, and China as ‘xenophobic’ US allies

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Joe Biden sparked controversy on Wednesday when he referred to close US ally Japan as “xenophobic” during a fundraiser in Washington, D.C. This statement came just weeks after Biden praised the US-Japan alliance at a state dinner.

Biden made the remark while discussing the economic performance of countries like Japan, India, Russia, and China, suggesting that they would benefit from embracing immigration. He pointed out that the US economy thrives because of its welcoming stance towards immigrants.

The president’s comments drew mixed reactions, with some questioning the diplomatic implications of his words. However, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre clarified that Biden was making a broader point about the importance of immigration to a nation’s identity.

Despite the backlash, Jean-Pierre emphasized the enduring importance of the US-Japan relationship and expressed confidence that it would continue. She also noted that Biden values the capabilities that Japan and other countries bring to various issues.

This is not the first time Biden has referred to Japan, Russia, and China as “xenophobic.” In a previous interview, he made similar remarks about these countries’ attitudes towards immigration.

The latest critique of Japan comes at a sensitive time, as Biden has been working to strengthen relations with both Japan and India as counterweights to China’s influence. The president’s comments also coincide with domestic political pressure over immigration policies and strained resources to address migrant influxes.
