Biden subtly references Trump in D-Day speech on democracy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Joe Biden delivered a powerful speech on Friday, urging Americans to defend democracy at home and abroad by following the example of the Greatest Generation. Speaking from the same location where President Ronald Reagan honored the US Army Rangers who fought at Pointe du Hoc during World War II, Biden drew parallels between the past and present struggles for democracy.

Without mentioning his 2024 election opponent by name, Biden alluded to former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy, aligning him with authoritarian forces. He emphasized the importance of staying true to American values and honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom in the past.

Biden’s speech came just a day after he called on the West to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced a new $225 million arms package for Kyiv, apologizing for the delay in providing military aid.

The President praised Zelensky and the Ukrainian people for their resilience and determination in the face of war. He reassured them of America’s support, stating, “We’re not going to walk away from you.”

Biden’s message resonated with the audience, reminding them of the values worth fighting and dying for: freedom, democracy, and the worth of America and the world. As the current generation, he urged Americans to be the keepers of the mission and the bearers of the flame of freedom that past heroes kept burning bright.
