Biden urges audience to applaud during West Point commencement speech

President Joe Biden faced an awkward moment during his commencement address at West Point military academy on Saturday when he asked the crowd to applaud his inspirational statement to the newly graduated cadets.

While delivering the commencement address, Mr. Biden received enthusiastic applause for joking about the rivalry between West Point and Annapolis, the United States Naval Academy. However, when he offered words of encouragement about leading the world, the crowd fell silent.

“Never forget, America is the strongest when we lead not only by our example our power, but by the power of our example,” Mr. Biden said, prompting a few seconds of silence before he added, “You can clap for that.”

The crowd responded with golf-like applause before Mr. Biden continued his speech, emphasizing the importance of pledging allegiance to the Constitution rather than a political party. He also assured the cadets that he would keep American soldiers out of Ukraine and Israel.

During his address, Mr. Biden briefly touched on ongoing wars and foreign threats, expressing support for Ukraine in their conflict with Russia and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also warned about China’s attempts to control Taiwan and Iranian missile attacks on Israel.

While Mr. Biden did not mention his political opponent, Donald Trump, directly, he emphasized the importance of upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution and the West Point honor code.

As the new graduates embark on their military careers, Mr. Biden urged them to remain loyal to their oath and the principles of integrity and honor instilled by the academy.
