Himalaya Srivastava, store manager at Bath Depot in Kitchener, Ont., has noticed a significant increase in interest in bidets over the past few years. This trend has only accelerated since the onset of the pandemic, as shoppers faced toilet paper shortages and turned to bidets as a solution.
The rise in demand for bidets can be attributed to the diverse population in Canada, with immigrants from various parts of the world bringing their cultural practices with them. Handheld bidets, also known as bum guns, have become a popular choice among customers, offering a convenient and eco-friendly way to clean up after using the bathroom.
But it’s not just handheld bidets that are flying off the shelves. Smart toilets, equipped with advanced features like seat heating and air drying, are also gaining traction among Canadian consumers. University of Guelph professor Ryan Gregory recently installed two bidets in his home after being inspired by his travels in Japan, sparking curiosity and interest among his social media followers.
Whether it’s a handheld bidet or a high-tech smart toilet, Srivastava believes that making the switch is not only more hygienic but also beneficial for overall comfort. As he puts it, “It will make your butt a little softer too.” So, as Canadians embrace this bidet boom, it seems that the days of relying solely on toilet paper may soon be a thing of the past.
