Pharma giants are making big moves in the fight against cancer, with acquisitions of startups developing innovative ways to use radiation therapy. Perspective Therapeutics Inc., based in Richland, Washington, has seen its value skyrocket to $833 million this year, thanks to the radiopharmaceuticals frenzy. CEO Thijs Spoor has been in the spotlight at industry events, as investors clamor for a piece of the action.

Major players like Eli Lilly & Co., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., and AstraZeneca Plc have collectively spent nearly $8 billion on companies developing radiopharmaceuticals in the past six months. These therapies offer the promise of targeting tumors with precision while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.

The radiopharmaceutical market is projected to reach $39 billion by 2032, up from $7 billion in 2022. However, challenges remain, particularly in production and distribution. Companies need access to nuclear reactors for isotope production and face strict regulatory requirements. AstraZeneca’s acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals was driven by the need for manufacturing capabilities.

Despite the excitement surrounding these deals, some analysts caution that the potential income from these products is still uncertain. CEO Spoor predicts a shift towards acquiring companies with strong patent-protected assets in the future.
