Jeremy Maclean, a former troublemaker turned triathlon champion, has set his sights on becoming a world champion after winning his first half Ironman race. The 19-year-old from Moseley triumphed over 1,569 amateur competitors in the Ironman 70.3 Gulf Coast event in the US on 11 May.

Maclean, who moved to the US last year on a sports scholarship, finished fourth in the National Collegiate Triathlon championships in California on 14 April, which earned him a professional license. His father, Adam, described him as a “Birmingham success story” and credited grassroots sports clubs for setting him on the path to success.

Despite his troubled past as a “tearaway” teenager, Maclean found focus and determination through triathlon training. With the support of local coaches and clubs, he has transformed into a top athlete with his eyes set on professional success.

Maclean’s father expressed pride in his son’s achievements and highlighted the effort and dedication he puts into his training. Maclean himself is excited about the future and believes that with hard work and determination, he can reach the top of the Ironman world.

As he prepares for his first professional event in July, Maclean remains humble yet ambitious, stating, “There’s no reason why I couldn’t get pretty close or all the way to the top – as why would you limit yourself?” With his incredible journey from troubled teen to triathlon star, Jeremy Maclean is a shining example of how dedication and perseverance can lead to success.
