The Marshall Tigers softball team is gearing up for the 2023-24 season with a mix of experienced players and fresh faces. After a successful 15-8 record last season, the team is looking to make another deep run in the Section 2AAA tournament.
Senior pitcher Morgan Bjella will lead the team in the circle after an impressive performance last season, including a four-inning perfect game. Bjella finished the season with a 1.42 ERA, .902 WHIP, and 101 strikeouts. She has already shown her dominance this year with a .438 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 16 innings.
Halla Casavan returns as the team’s offensive leader, boasting a 1.107 OPS last season with four home runs and 26 RBIs. She has continued her strong performance at the plate this year with a 1.67 OPS in the early games.
While the team lost some key players from last season, including Lauren Wherry, Randi Wendorff, and Olivia Houseman, they have depth with players like Brielle Riess and Mackenzie Olsen stepping up. Riess had a .388 on-base percentage and an .862 OPS last season, while Olsen contributed with a .813 OPS and power hitting.
The Tigers also have another strong pitching arm in Harley Beek, who threw 23 strikeouts over 35 2/3 innings last year. The team is under new leadership this season, with head coach Stacey Baedke and assistant coach Ryan Baedke taking over from the retiring coaches.
With a mix of experienced seniors and talented newcomers, the Marshall Tigers softball team is poised for another competitive season as they aim to make a mark in the Section 2AAA tournament.
