Blinken begins his Middle East trip with arrival in Saudi Arabia

Reading Time: 2 minutes

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Saudi Arabia marks the beginning of a crucial trip to the Middle East, with a focus on addressing the governance of Gaza following the ongoing conflict with Israel. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, Blinken’s diplomatic efforts are aimed at finding a sustainable solution to the crisis that has left Gaza in ruins.

In Riyadh, Blinken is set to engage in high-level meetings with senior Saudi leaders and counterparts from five Arab states, including Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. The discussions will center around the future governance of Gaza once the conflict with Israel comes to an end. A senior State Department official revealed that the talks will also involve European states, with a focus on mobilizing support for the rebuilding efforts in Gaza.

One of the key topics on the agenda is the potential normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel, a move that could have significant implications for regional stability. In exchange for normalization, Washington is reportedly considering offering Riyadh agreements on bilateral defense and security commitments, as well as nuclear cooperation. However, the deal is contingent on Israel agreeing to a pathway for Palestinian statehood, a demand that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently rejected.

Following his visit to Saudi Arabia, Blinken will travel to Jordan and Israel, where the focus will shift towards addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The U.S. diplomat is expected to urge Netanyahu to take concrete steps to improve the living conditions in Gaza, a move that has been demanded by President Joe Biden.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, has resulted in devastating consequences for both sides. Hamas fighters launched an attack on Israel in October, leading to a significant loss of life and the capture of hostages. In response, Israel imposed a total siege on Gaza and launched a military offensive that has claimed the lives of thousands of Palestinians, according to health authorities in the region.

As Blinken navigates the complex dynamics of the Middle East, his visit to the region underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The discussions in Saudi Arabia and beyond will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Gaza and the broader Middle East, as regional powers grapple with the aftermath of the devastating conflict.
