Ranjeet Was Offered Iconic Villain Gabbar’s Role in ‘Sholay’ Before Amjad Khan
In a recent revelation, veteran actor Ranjeet shared that he was offered the iconic villain Gabbar Singh’s role in the cult classic ‘Sholay’ before it eventually went to the late actor Amjad Khan. Ranjeet disclosed in an interview that he turned down the role to honor his friendship with fellow actor Danny Denzongpa.
The role of Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’ is considered one of the most memorable characters in Hindi cinema, with Amjad Khan’s portrayal leaving a lasting impact on audiences. However, it is interesting to note that both Danny Denzongpa and Ranjeet were also considered for the role before Khan was finalized.
Ranjeet recounted the incident, stating that when the makers approached him for the role, he insisted on getting a no objection letter from Danny, as the two actors shared a close friendship. Ultimately, Ranjeet decided to decline the offer, paving the way for Amjad Khan to make his mark as Gabbar Singh.
Reflecting on his decision, Ranjeet humorously remarked, “This role was destined for Amjad Khan…Ho sakta hai main Gabbar karta toh shayd audience ko nahin acha lagta” (It’s possible that if I had played Gabbar, the audience may not have liked it).
Despite missing out on the opportunity to play Gabbar Singh, Ranjeet and Danny’s friendship remains strong to this day, with the two actors often sharing glimpses of their camaraderie on social media. Ranjeet’s candid revelation sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of casting decisions in Bollywood and the importance of personal relationships in the industry.
