Boris Becker, tennis legend, declared bankrupt in England, now discharged – Entertainment News

German tennis legend Boris Becker was discharged from bankruptcy court in London after a judge found Wednesday he had done “all that he reasonably could do” to repay creditors tens of millions of pounds.

Becker, 57, faced financial troubles after owing creditors nearly 50 million pounds ($62.5 million) over an unpaid loan of more than 3 million pounds ($3.75 million) on his estate in Mallorca, Spain. Despite falling short of repaying his creditors in full, Chief Insolvency and Companies Court Judge Nicholas Briggs commended Becker for his efforts.

Becker, who rose to stardom in 1985 as the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon singles title at the age of 17, had a successful tennis career, becoming the world No. 1 player and winning multiple Grand Slam titles. However, he retired from professional tennis in 1999 and faced financial difficulties in recent years.

In 2022, Becker was convicted in a London court on charges related to illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding assets after being declared bankrupt in 2017. He served 8 months in a London prison and was deported to Germany two years ago.

Despite his legal troubles, Becker has continued to work as a coach, television commentator, investor, and celebrity poker player. His lawyer, Louis Doyle, stated that Becker had reached a settlement with his creditors, including a “substantial sum” that he must pay.

While Becker’s financial problems have been a challenging chapter in his life, the tennis great is now looking to move forward and put this chapter behind him as he continues to rebuild his financial stability.
