Scouting America: Boy Scouts of America Changes Name to Reflect Inclusivity

In a historic move, the Boy Scouts of America announced that it will be changing its name to Scouting America on its 115th anniversary on Feb. 8, 2025. The decision comes as part of the organization’s commitment to welcoming every youth and family in America.

Roger A. Krone, the president and CEO of Scouting America, emphasized that despite the name change, the mission of the organization remains the same: to teach young people to be Prepared. For Life. Krone stated, “This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.”

The national organization, headquartered in Irving, Texas, made the announcement at its annual meeting on Tuesday. This change follows the 2017 decision to allow girls to join Cub Scouts and earn the top rank of Eagle Scout, leading to the program name change to Scouts BSA.

However, the Girl Scouts of America expressed concerns over the name change, with Lisa Margosian, chief customer officer, stating that the organization felt “blindsided” by the decision. The Girl Scouts filed a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts, alleging damage to their trademarks and brand identity. The two organizations recently reached an agreement to end the trademark litigation.

The Boy Scouts of America faced financial challenges in recent years, filing for bankruptcy in 2020. The U.S. Supreme Court recently approved a $2.4 billion plan to settle sex abuse lawsuits against the organization. Despite these challenges, Scouting America remains committed to its mission of preparing young people for life.
