Brandeis Center Alleges Harvard Deliberately Ignored Antisemitism in Lawsuit

Harvard University is facing a lawsuit from the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Jewish Americans for Fairness in Education, accusing the prestigious institution of turning a blind eye to antisemitism on campus. The 72-page complaint alleges that Harvard has allowed antisemitism and anti-Israeli sentiment to thrive, creating an unwelcoming environment for Jewish students.

The lawsuit highlights two specific incidents that have sparked controversy. The first involves accusations of antisemitism against Harvard Kennedy School lecturer Marshall L. Ganz by three Israeli students, who claimed they were discriminated against based on their ethnic identities. An independent investigator hired by HKS Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf found evidence of discrimination, but the plaintiffs argue that Harvard failed to take prompt and effective action in response.

The second incident centers around a viral video showing two graduate students, Elom Tettey-Tamaklo and Ibrahim I. Bharmal, confronting an Israeli student at a protest on campus. The students were later charged with assault and battery, as well as violating the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act. The lawsuit criticizes Harvard for not taking immediate disciplinary action against the students and accuses the university of applying a double standard when it comes to addressing allegations of antisemitism.

In response to the lawsuit, Harvard spokesperson Jason A. Newton reiterated the university’s commitment to combating hate and promoting civil dialogue. However, he declined to comment on the specifics of the case due to the pending litigation.

The plaintiffs argue that Harvard’s handling of antisemitism on campus is far more lenient than its approach to other forms of discrimination, calling for the university to take a stronger stance against antisemitic behavior. The lawsuit raises important questions about how universities address issues of discrimination and intolerance on their campuses.
